Weapons of Mass Publicity

I discovered Web marketer Ross Hill’s blog when it popped into the Biznik Top Member Sites yesterday (another great reason to add a link to Biznik from your blog). This post of his caught my attention enough that I’m going to repost it here, with a nod to Ross’s blog, thrivenow.com.au, where he posts “about websites, internet marketing and entrepreneurship and everything in between.”

Bush Flag

Little yellow flags have invaded parks all around the world in a fight for peace. Thanks to free speech and the power of the internet MadeYouThink.com has set up an army of people to place little yellow flags with a picture of George Bush in those piles found in parks. The phenomenon started in America and has spread around the world to Germany.

The people behind this new movement will send you a set of flags in the mail if you send them an envelope, or they are freely downloadable at their flags page. This is a great example of the power of word of mouth over the internet. Photos of the flags were posted to a blog and days later were found in some of the big newspapers of the world. Have you thought about what kind of publicity stunt you could use to promote what you are doing?

Out here I’m afraid we’ll be denied the opportunity to fly too many of these flags–we green urban Seattleites are more likely to ride around naked than we are to disobey scoop laws. (Can I hear it for a Biznik cycling team in the Fremont Solstice Parade next year?) But I’d love to hear Ross’s question answered by the Biznik community: what type of publicity stunts would work for your business?

Oooh, the possibilities! You can bet I’m going to be thinking about this now…

And sign me up for the Naked Biznik cycling team next year! May I suggest Biznik flags on the bikes and our individual logos and/or product/service themes painted onto our bodies?

    Fun! ;-P

    Kisses,
    Ms. Scarlett

Except that the Fremont Solstice Fair has a strict rule - no written words or logos. I think the ban has succeeded fairly well in keeping the fair eclectic and non-commercial. But they couldn’t object to a bunch of us painted Biznik green with green flags, could they? There’s some guerrilla marketing for ya.

    I like it!

On another note, a neighborhood dog decided to leave a present at the end of my driveway in Bremerton. I am so tempted to print out a little yellow Bush sign…:-P

However, I’m on good terms with many of my conservative neighbors and don’t want to rock the boat where I live. I already cause enough of a stir. ;-)

But the implications on how powerful that little flag would be have certainly stuck with me…

  4. Biznik - Business Networking that Doesn’t Suck » 19-year-old entrepreneur Ross Hill hosts the first international Biznik event in Australia Says:

[...] Biznik now has members in 46 countries. But so far, all of our events have been in the United States. Thanks to Ross Hill, that’s about to change. The 19-year-old entrepreneur and university student from Australia will host Cashflow 101, the first international Biznik event on Wednesday, Dec. 6. I’ve mentioned Ross before in this post, but this occasion merits a full interview… [...]
