Subscribe to Indie Biz Q&A Alibaba.com

Hi everyone! Anyone know what the deal is with Alibaba? I was on their site trying to figure out what the point would be of joining up - other than B2B opps - but I can't figure out their premise. I may be dense. Can anyone clue me in?

Yup, actually one of my best friends from college was a big muckey-muck there until the buyout by Yahoo. Basically they are based in Hangzhou china and they are there to connect you (a person with a product you would like to bring to market) with manufacturers, primarily in china, or suppliers of component parts- also usually in the Far East. They put the 2 of you together, you go off and make oodles of $$ with your t-shirt or dishes or toys and they charge a fee on both sides. After their purchase by Yahoo I believe they also began doing some serious ad revenue but my 'inside' info left at that point so I am not as up on what has happened there in the last year or so. Hope that helps!

Yeah, it does. A lot. Thanks so much! I already know I don't want to manufacture overseas but it's always nice to know what's possible.
