Tips for avoiding feeling overwhelmed by starting up or maintaining your own business
Whether you've just started a business or are continuing to run one, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the details. This article offers three tips to help you avoid that feeling.
You've recently started up your business and it seems like everything is running smoothly, until one day you feel a quiver of anxiety in your gut when you realize that there's lots of details that haven't been attended to. Soon you feel stressed and worried and you wonder if you can even make your business work.
Does this description remind you of yourself? Starting up a business can be an alternately wonderful and stressful experience. And even after you've started a business, years down the line you can still end up feeling the way I described, because when you're running a business, you need to stay on top of the details while also looking at the big picture. The following tips are written to help you whether you're starting a business or currently running one.
1. You won't get everything done in one day. It's easy to feel like you have to do everything all at once. The problem with that is that your focus will be scattered and chances are you won't get anything done. So relax, organize your to do list towards being able to accomplish goals in the short run, mid term, and long run and then focus on getting the short term goals accomplished. And if you still haven't done everything you wanted to do at the end of the day, relax, do something fun, and tomorrow get to that detail you missed today. It will still be there tomorrow, as will you more than likely.
By recognizing that you can only get so much done in a given day you'll start to pace yourself and not get stressed if something isn't finished. Pacing yourself and organizing your tasks into lists will help you prioritize what needs to be done in a given day as well as plan for when the rest of the details will be handled. Make a calendar, weekly or monthly, where you can write down tasks that you want to accomplish. You can use the calendar to measure what you have accomplished, while also keeping an idea on the tasks that you want to accomplish.
2. Hire a coach and/or a Virtual office assistant. Hiring a coach can help you get laser beam focused on what you are trying to accomplish. The coach isn't going to be emotionally involved in running your business and as such will be able to listen to you and ask questions that may help you recognize where changes need to occur in your business. A marketing coach or a small business coach is very helpful because they can help you work on issues in marketing your business as well as helping you develop plans to become more visible. Additionally they can help you uncover any subconscious blocks you have toward becoming successful in your business.
A virtual office assistant can also be very helpful because s/he will take on a lot of tasks that you may not have time to do, or may not want to put time toward. By hiring someone else to attend those tasks you can focus on other projects for your business.
Something else to look into is automated services. Using automated services lets you automate your emails, newsletters so that they don't take up as much time and also keep your clients informed about your offers and other deals.
3. Know when to confide in others. Running a business can be lonely. You are in charge, and so you are at the top. Know when to confide in others when you feel frustration or worry about your business. This is especially helpful if you can find someone who can act as a mentor for you. That person might be able to offer you advice or suggestions based on their own experiences. Additionally by being able to talk with someone about your concerns, you won't be sabotaging your efforts with those emotions later on. Remember that you aren't alone. Find other people you can talk with and be open with them about your frustrations. You might be surprised at the solutions or suggestions they offer.
Remember that starting or maintaining a business doesn't have to be an onerous trial. Yes, you may have lots of things you need to accomplish, but knowing how to pace and organize yourself first will ensure that you accomplish all those things. Likewise, knowing that you have other resources available to you will also help you out in the long run, because you'll know how to delegate the work and leave yourself time to live life.
